Anesthesia Options for Lithotripsy Treatments

چکیده

As of May 1985, Six U.S. hospitals were performing ESWL treatments using the first generation HM3 lithotripter. Of the patients treated in these facilities, 47.5% were given regional anesthesia (spinal or epidural) and 52.5% were given general anesthesia1. The option to administer regional anesthesia was one factor that increased the safety of ESWL relative to open surgery. Today’s next generation lithotripters offer even more flexibility in the types of anesthesia that can be administered to ESWL patients.

Alfentanil analgesia/sedation for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy: a comparison with general and epidural anesthesia.

An alfentanil infusion was used to produce analgesia and sedation for patients undergoing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy with the Dornier HM-4 lithotripter. This was compared to general and epidural anesthesia in a retrospective review of 197 consecutive patients. Total care time, anesthesia time, and recovery room time were shorter for the alfentanil analgesia/sedation group. The incide...

[Clinical experience with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy MFL-5000 for urinary stone].

A Dornier MFL 5000, a new generation extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter, was installed in our hospital and the first Japanese clinical experience has been collected between July and November in 1989. We report our experience with the first 35 patients with 45 stones who were treated in 42 treatments using ESWL. We followed up 3 weeks. No invasive anesthesia was performed except 2 cases of e...

Outcome of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy monotherapy for large renal calculi: effect of stone and collecting system surface areas and cost-effectiveness of treatment.

The treatment options for large renal calculi are controversial. We report on our experience with 65 treatments of renal calculi > 3 cm using extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) monotherapy. We stratified our results according to stone and collecting system surface areas (measured by computer image analyses), stone location, and stone type. The overall success rate of SWL monotherapy was...

Management of urinary tract calculi by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

From July 1989 to April 1993, Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) was performed on 642 patients, of which 21 were from the pediatric age group. All treatments were done on a second generation lithotriptor-Siemens Lithostar, which does not require any modification for positioning of children. Fragmentation was achieved in all the patients (100%). A complete stone free rate was achieved i...
